Cat Intake Policies

  • We do not take feral cats. Animal must be friendly and able to be handled safely, i.e., easy to catch, able to be held/restrained and allows humans to touch all body parts.
  • Animal must appear to be relatively healthy, i.e., no discharge from eyes or nose; no excessive sneezing/coughing; no major medical issues, i.e., wounds/broken bones. We do treat all animals for fleas and internal parasites and give first set of vaccinations.
  • All Owner Surrendered cats (“I’ve had this cat for 10 years”; “I have been feeding this cat in my barn for 6 months….”) MUST have proof of a negative Feline Leukemia test, done within a week of the surrender. Any information on medical history is greatly appreciated. There is a $15 Owner Surrender fee.
  • All Stray cats (“I found this cat alongside the road yesterday…”) will be tested for Feline Leukemia at ARC. Any cat that tests positive may be euthanized.
  • At this time, we can accept one cat per family. ARC may use discretion in the situation of a mother cat and her nursing kittens or a litter of abandoned kittens, depending on space available.
  • We only accept animals from residents of Mecosta County. The person bringing in the cat will need to show proof of this, via a valid driver’s license, regardless of whether it is an Owner Surrender or a Stray.
